North from Waipoua Kauri Forest, on a mild winter’s day in August, I entered Ninety Mile Beach. I was at the southern end where the name alone brought forth an image of an endless deserted beach stretching as far as the eye could see. Instead, I heard the roar of four-wheel drive vehicles tear up the tranquility.

What a pity. I would love to wander on that beach.
