A small haven on the Con Dao Islands

Con Son on the main island, had instant appeal. Tree lined streets shaded French style bungalows where only the occasional sound of traffic was heard.

Common style of many of Con Son’s older buildings

The quiet town reminded me a little of Bali in the seventies; peaceful except for the crow of roosters and not many tourists. Unlike the Indonesian island at that time however, it had the comforts for a traveller.

There were sweepers everywhere keeping the town clean

I would soon find out, there were some darker differences.

Beautiful tree on the way to the cemetery, Con Son
