Secrets of a tin trunk

I can’t find an exact replica of the tin trunk my mother-in-law kept under her bed, but this one is close. My in-laws lived in an upstairs apartment overlooking a street in downtown Dar es Salaam. Not once when I visited did I find her tin trunk unlocked but I’m sure it held everything she deemed valuable.

The memory of her secret stash has become the motif for my novel about a family living in that very Dar es Salaam flat and although I know what happens to the peti in my story, I wonder what happened to my mother-in-law’s tin trunk?

  1. That is a brilliant set of trunks. If I every traveled to Tanzania and caught sight of these beauties, I’d be shipping them home to myself. I love to “antique.” Great photo, Mallee.
