A thousand boats lay in wait for the on-slaught of tourists ready to embark along this muddy river in Tam Coc, just out of Ninh Binh.
I was one of those tourists who was instantly entranced by the way the Vietnamese used their oars. Instead of using their hands to row the tin boats, they used their feet. Soon however, my attention was drawn to the beautiful rice paddy fields enclosed by rocky crags.
The river glided through caves where at one point, it was close to dark before the light from the opposite end led the way.
