Dar es Salaam treasure

Ebony? In Tanzania it’s not the well-known bIack ebony. African carvers coat their finished art with black boot polish to resemble the sort-after dark cousin, but that wouldn’t do for something you want to eat from.

20160826_065139I bought the bowl from one of the street vendors along what was once called Independence Avenue in Dar es Salaam. His wares were displayed over the pavement and it was hard to pass without stopping for a quick glance even though I walked by nearly every day.

Sadly, a small crack’s appeared in the bowl but I can’t complain after using it for decades.
