Bears of Buntzen Lake

I took a bear bell with me while I hiked the Buntzen Lake Trail. While I’d prefer to listen to the forest sounds on a hike, the bell alerts bears that I’m around so they stay clear. They have as much desire to run into me as I have for them.

While I skirted the lake to the very end of one corner, I passed a number of other hikers, all with their dogs on leads. If a dog isn’t on a leash, it will chase after a bear. Only when it confronts the bear will it realise its mistake and race back to its owner bringing the bear with it. Consequently, I didn’t spot one dog owner letting their pet run free.
