Kandy was a cool change from the coast. In the mountainous interior, the landscape was lush.
I travelled by bus out of the town to the Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya. The gardens were contained in a loop of the Mahaweli River.
An avenue of palms is what I remember most. Perhaps it’s because these Palmyra palms were the very trees systematically bombed by the Lankan army around the northern town of Jaffna.
