A taste of Uganda’s India

Indian food in East Africa had a distinctly different flavour from dishes anywhere in India. After Asians once settled in a new continent, cooking took on a mixture of spices from India with a touch of Africa.

That’s what to expect if you visit Jambo Grill on Kingsway, Vancouver. The owner who was expelled from Uganda (like all Ugandan Asians) back in the seventies, has a delicious array of flavoursome dishes like no other in Vancouver. In fact, this is the only restaurant where I’ll eat biriyani because in my view, the other restaurants in the Lower Mainland with this item on their menu are actually serving something else.

Jambo Grill’s bhel puri

Recently, I took my tiffin with me because I not only ate in the restaurant but wanted to take out the best bhel puri you’ll get anywhere.
