A Makonde carver created this work with hand tools, scooping out hollows along both sides of the Mancala game board.
Players distributed seedpods in every pocket with the aim to collect the most in the ‘home’ square. I never saw the game played while I lived in Dar es Salaam, but know this jewel was from Tanzania.
Does anyone know where the game originated?
