Kushiro Park, located on Burnaby Mountain, was established to commemorate Kushiro in Japan and its sister city, Burnaby.
At one end, stunning views stretched all the way to the Straight of Georgia. Tall wooden carvings dotted the sloping hillside with a mix of First Nation symbols and a hint of Buddhism. At the opposite end was a rose garden in full bloom.
The park could be reached by road but we parked at the bottom of the mountain off the Barnett Highway and climbed the 500 steps.
