Tikitapu was named after the daughter of a chief who lost her sacred greenstone neck ornament. The pristine waters, located just out of Rotorua, were surrounded by a forest of tree ferns.
Around the lake was a hiking trail under lush vegetation for two thirds of its circumference. Unfortunately, the remaining third of the path ran along side the highway, spoiling an otherwise peaceful setting.
