After my Aboriginal tour through the National Gallery of Victoria, I had one more section to visit — the Heidelberg School, and in particular, Fred McCubbin. In the 1800s, the artist left the traditional method of indoor painting and ventured outside to embody the real Australia.

The Pioneer depicts the same location in three different time periods. Every visit to Melbourne, I have to see this painting. Something in its images speaks to me. I think it’s a connection with the painting’s disappearing bush like the one once next door to where I lived as a child.
