I skytrained to Richmond to the heart of Vancouver’s Chinese community. I may have been surrounded by Asian languages, but I entered the Richmond Centre to find a shopping centre no different from any other, with only one Chinese restaurant.
Disappointed, I scoured the streets, walked through the markets, but didn’t discover what I’d hoped to find until I entered Aberdeen. Aberdeen Square was full of the kind of shops — herbs, jewellery, acupuncture — that I could peek into for a glimpse of something different.
Behind this building was the Aberdeen Centre where I entered Daiso for the chop sticks and bowls I’d been hunting for.
