I like to hike the back streets of Calgary. It’s quieter — away from traffic. It’s where I garner a little shade if the streets are lined with trees instead of shops.
On a recent hike I noticed a black-billed magpie strutting from one side of the road to the other in search of food. I followed it because I find these long tailed birds with their silky feathers remind me of similar magpies in Australia. Soon I heard the distinct cry of a baby hiding in the bushes and discovered the mother I followed carried a seed in her beak to give to her offspring.
