At the southern end of Pauanui Beach was South End Reserve. With a walking trail leading to Flat Rock and Cave Beach, it was hard to resist. Another trail lead over and around the reserve, but I decided to stick close to the sea.

After a short hike, I arrived at Flat Rock, where fishers stood near the water’s edge clutching their fishing rods.
The patterns on the rocks were mesmerizing. Still I turned south to tackle the next leg of the hike. Unfortunately, there was no path, merely a bed of ankle twisting rocks, so after making it to the next point with no sign of the cave, I turned back.
Love the ruggedness of the setting.
