The big freeze

I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve visited Calgary, so have witnessed the Bow River that runs through the heart of the city at different seasons. What I hadn’t experienced was the Bow completely frozen.

This year was my first chance to see the river I thought would freeze completely, so when the temperature dropped to -30, I was eager to head to the river’s edge. While much of the surface appeared as if the usually fast moving river had ceased, there were signs to indicate this wasn’t completely the case.
