I’d crossed Calgary’s Fourth Street Bridge many times but ignored the sign to Elbow Islands Park. Last month, I finally descended the stairs onto an island within the Elbow River.
Elbow Islands Park’s trail circuited the tiny island and while I trudged over the snow, I caught glimpses of the Elbow River. Many of the trees were enclosed in wire; a sure sign of beavers at work. I soon found a tree gnawed into before it was fenced off from the famed Canadian creature I had yet to spot.
In spite of the perfect winter day, I only passed one other hiker ploughing their way through the snow.
