Emerald Hill

There was a number of businesses in South Melbourne that included Emerald Hill in their name, but where was this hill?

During the mid 1800s, a small hill surrounded by swamp was given this name probably because it was covered in green vegetation while the land around was sandy swamp. The area expanded during the gold rush era, but today this tiny section of South Melbourne could easily be overlooked.

On the apex of the mound, once Emerald Hill, I found some of its original buildings: the police station, city hall and library that was once the post office all preserved and hidden away from busy Clarendon Street.
