I was on the way to Richmond for research. I needed to confirm locations in the Melbourne suburb to make sure what I’d written in the first draft of a manuscript I’d almost finished, was accurate.
Because of the chill in the air, I passed through arcades rather than main streets when I made the last leap on to Flinders Street. I’d written about Melbourne’s famous arcades, but this one was just as beautiful. Perhaps the shops were dead and gone, but the original ceiling still set off the atmosphere that once must have prevailed below.
