After being in Melbourne for a couple of months, I admired many of its buildings, but coming across others I was surprised that such structures were allowed by any council.
Near the junction of the Princess Highway, Queens Road and St Kilda Road, was my grandson’s favourite apartment block. I thought the building the most ugly I’d ever seen, with or without the multi-coloured exterior.
On the way to the Melbourne Museum, I passed the Princess Theatre. This 1800s building was originally an equestrian amphitheatre before it was renovated into a theatre and opera house. Operas are no longer performed in the building. Instead, modern musicals have taken over.
I visited Melbourne’s Royal Exhibition Building about ten years ago and because I remembered the stunning interior, wanted to revisit the domed building. When I arrived, it was closed to visitors in preparation for an upcoming event — a disappointment because it was the most stunning building.
