A volcanic column joint zone

Along a two kilometre stretch of Gyeongju’s coastline at Yangnam was a walkway where I passed columns of rocks scattered next to the East Sea shoreline.

About twenty million years ago the region was inland and volcanically active. These unique shaped rocks were formed when lava flowed over a flat surface both above and below ground. The hexagonal remains were the remnants of the upper and lower surfaces of lava while the pillar shapes were the remnants of the interior of the lava.
