Taiwan’s oldest temple

I wasn’t going to visit another temple, but as I made my way along Tamsui’s Zhongshan Road, I passed the oldest temple in Taiwan. My feet took over my thoughts and I stepped towards the side entrance.

Fuyou Temple was dedicated to worshipping Matsu, the goddess who protected sailors and fishers from the sea. It was not ostentatious as Guandu’s temple had been.

It was completed in 1796 and since then experienced several renovations. However, it was clear when I studied the ceiling that most of the temple was original. A couple of metres above the roof, was an additional roof to protect this historic site.
