I meandered down a narrow lane before returning to Hengchun. An old signpost at the entrance hinted that some of the graves around the laneway might be from the town’s ancient past.
There were tombs with elaborate dragons pictured either side of the entrance to locked crypts. One I passed covered a huge area, but when I inched closer I could see it was a family plot as there were three burials behind the altar.
I searched for older plots and discovered many covered by weeds, long forgotten. Some had tumbled to their side and lay neglected as if there were no remaining relatives to tend them.
