While Whakarewarewa was a living village within Rotorua where most of the people residing within its boundaries were related, it was also a major tourist attraction.

The north island’s sand dunes

New Zealand’s sand dunes weren’t far from Cape Reinga. The route south bounced down a dirt road to dunes rising majestically to meet the blue sky.

Waitangi’s Treaty Site

Before returning to the Bay of Islands, I stopped at Waitangi’s Treaty House. The walls were lined with majestic portraits of Maori chiefs who signed the treaty with their tattooed faces visible in the dim light. A video boomed from the next room, a marked reminder of the significance of the place.
